How To Print And Markup Your House Plans

Print And Markup Instructions For House Plans

I will email each markup set in pdf format.

For the markup sets you can print on 8.5″ x 11″ size paper.

Please print the “TEMPLATE” file to markup, add comments or changes (red pen or pencil works best). Once you’re finished, scan or take a photo of the revised plan. If you take pictures, zoom to make sure it’s not blurry.

You may also use a pdf program to mark up the house plan with various tools and add comments. Once you’re finished you can email the revised plan.

Printing Yourself

On your printer you can print, Not to Scale, on 8.5 x 11 pages from a pdf program such as Adobe Reader. Click Print. Under Page Size and Handling click Size. Under Size Options, click Fit or Shrink oversized pages.

Adobe Reader Required to Print.

Redline Markups – How Home Designers Use Them

General Guidelines for Markup Drawings

After you have printed your plan, its time to mark it up. This is also called “red lines”, “red-lining” or the “markup”.

Markups are a way of communicating your changes to the home designer or architect.

  • Using red is important because it makes your changes stand out from the drawings.
  • The main thing to remember is when you change one dimension it normally affects one or more other dimension.
  • Changing stairs on one floor will change the floor opening or landing point on the floor above or below.
  • After you have the plan markup, scan or take pictures and email it to me.

This is a great article about redline markups on the website Life of an Architect.

Final Set Paper Size

  • D-Size Paper – The PDF files that I will email you are usually in a 36″ wide x 24″ high format. Normally they will need to be emailed to a print shop for printing.
  • Ledger Size Paper – Site plans are usually on 17″ wide x 11″ high size paper. Many office or home printers can print Ledger size, otherwise you may send them to a print shop.
